"A cheese may disappoint. It may be dull, it may be naive, it may be oversophisticated. Yet it remains cheese, milk's leap toward immortality."
Clifton Fadiman
As a self-confessed turophile (connosieur of cheese) this quote from US author Fadiman (obviously a man of good taste) strikes a chord with me. What lovely imagery!
In my opinion a good cheese can definitely be considered a work of art but now Ohio woman Sarah Kaufman takes it one step further with... cheese sculpture!
Known as "The Cheese Lady", Sarah, a qualified commercial artist, has made a fulltime career out of sculpting huge blocks of cheese into, well, just about anything really. Some of Sarah's more notable creations include a 2m long aircraft carrier, a 55kg Mickey Mouse, a 135kg gorilla and a life-like representation of talk show host Jay Leno. Sarah is apparently a regular at food and wine festivals, trade shows and corporate events but can also be hired to carve on-the-spot at birthday parties, weddings and, of course, cheese and wine tastings. It's all so delightfully whimsical that I can't help but love it. Now, if only we can entice Sarah to Australia...
