“Best $2000 I’ve ever spent,” said B, as he frothed milk contentedly . “I think this is the thing that’s made me happiest. You know, a physical thing.”
For an undeniably consumerist society, it’s rare to hear someone say that something concrete like a coffee machine makes them happy. People will readily ‘fess up to the relationships, occasions and actions that bring them joy but it doesn’t seem to be the done thing to admit to a frisson of happiness every time you slip into the drivers’ seat of your car or step into that pair of strappy sandals with the ludicrously high heels. And yet, if we’re honest, we all have physical things that make us happy. Since my conversation with B I’ve been thinking about some of mine:
* Striped socks At last count I had five pairs and they never fail to make me smile.
* Books I adore not just reading but books themselves – holding them, looking at them, smelling them – and struggle to let them go, even when my bookshelves are overflowing.
* Matching bras and undies Who cares if no one’s going to know? I will.
* New York City skyline snowdome I bought this supremely kitsch souvenir in the Statue of Liberty gift shop and can’t help giving it a good shake whenever I see it.
* “Gambler” earrings With playing cards, dollar signs and dangling diamante, these Japanese earrings are the ultimate in bling.
* Scrabble “lazy susan” These two sticks on rollers allow me to swivel the scrabble board to my heart’s content without disturbing any pieces. Genius.
* Subscription to Vanity Fair magazine My favourite magazine in the world, delivered to my letterbox monthly.
* Square-toed, red patent leather heels So sexy. And yes, the fact I bought them in New York does make them extra special.
* Tupperware containers Where do I start? So clever, so sturdy, so versatile.
What are some of the things that make you happy?
