I love farmers markets for the atmosphere, as much as the food, and at Orange Grove the crush is part of its charm. It doesn’t matter how early you arrive, there is always a press of locals shopping for the organic fruit, vegies, meat and chicken; handmade jams, preserves, pasta, cakes, quiches and pies; extra virgin olive oil; artisan breads; honey; herbal teas; cut flowers, and pots of herbs on offer. Everyone in invariably happy and smiling while they shop (something you don't usually see in Coles or Woolies).
Highlights for me include the Mangrove Mountain free-range eggs (the yolks are amazing); The Mushroom Depot, which offers varieties such as king brown, portobello, chestnut, enoki, golden enoki and shitake, plus recipe sheets for inspiration; Farmers Wife for their delicious Strawberry and Rhubarb jam; Eumundi Smokehouse, and of course the organic Mayan coffee stand for fuel on the go.
Today’s purchases: loaf of Sonoma Soy & Linseed bread, bunch each of baby asparagus, rhubarb and spinach, smoked chicken breast, chorizo sausages, Pink Lady apples, Kipfler potatoes and two bunches of scented white stock for $10. Now, to start cooking...

so what did you cook, pray tell?
ReplyDeleteNothing terribly gourmet! Ate the asparagus with scrambled eggs for breakfast, used the spinach and chorizo in a rich tomatoey sauce for pasta, and the smoked chicken as the centrepiece of a lunchtime salad. I was tossing up making an apple and rhubarb crumble (a winter favorite)but I'll probably just stew it up and serve it with Greek yoghurt for breakfast.
