In the last week or so I’ve been looking into downloading movies from the internet. I’ve never done it before but since I’d trade my favourite pair of red patent leather shoes* for the chance to see The September Issue (above), the as-yet-unreleased-in-Australia documentary following legendary US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour (on whom Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada is supposedly based) as she puts together the magazine’s September issue, I thought I’d give it a go. How hard could it be?The answer, it seems, is “not very” however I now know that downloading movies is a big “download suck”. Given that my current download limit is only 4GB a month (and yes, I probably do need to upgrade that), using 700MB to download a movie isn’t exactly a clever use of limited resources.
Hanging out last night with one of these techy-types who have an enormous download limit, I was thrilled when he offered to download The September Issue and my other must-see, yet-to-be-released-in-Oz flick Julie & Julia (below) for me. What’s more, said my friend, we’d probably be able to find them for free. Quickly dismissing the niggling suspicion that, in this case at least, free means “illegal”, I thought “woo hoo!”
Well, wasn’t I disappointed? It seems that the type of people who upload movies for other people to download “free” don’t watch documentaries like The September Issue or feel-good foodie flicks like Julie & Julia. GI Joe and Bruno on the other hand are readily available.
Hmmm, it seems I’ll just have to wait patiently after all. At least there’s only another couple of weeks to go until the Australian release of The September Issue. Sadly Julie & Julia isn’t released until October 8th.
* Maybe not…
