With the countdown to the Australian release of the much-anticipated foodie flick Julie & Julia picking up pace, my friend D (also a freelance food writer) and I booked tickets today to the Sydney premiere on October 1st, part of the upcoming Sydney International Food Festival. I’m guessing we’ll be keeping company with just about every other food writer and blogger in Sydney, as well as a whole heap of other people who don’t feel the need to pick up a pen every time they take a mouthful. Can’t wait! In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about my other favourite foodie flicks. Here are a few that I love:
Like Water for Chocolate
Proof that food can be truly magical and every dish is better when cooked with love.

Chocolat
Sinfully delicious chocolate and Johnny Depp – ‘nuff said.

Big Night
Two Italian immigrant brothers strive to save their failing restaurant with food, glorious food.

Babette's Feast
A no-nonsense stranger cooks for two lonely, uptight sisters and changes their lives one meal at a time.

Ratatouille
Who could fail to fall for cooking-obsessed Remy, the one rat you’d be happy to see in a restaurant kitchen?

What are some of your faves?

Your number 1 is my number 1. I knew you were a foodie after my own heart. Like Water for Chocolate: Beautiful film, beautiful book - one of those rare instances where I could never quite decide which I liked best.
ReplyDeleteI really want to see Tampopo (set in a ramen restaurant) pre my Japan trip. Have you seen this?
Ash Street Cellars Monday night food movie nights in the laneways - we must go! (Carli also keen.) Surely they'll show LWFC. It's one of the all-time food movie classics after all.

I'm always hesitant to see the movies of books I love but you're right, in this case, both were amazing. Haven't seen Tampopo either - thanks for the suggestion!
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've heard Tampopo is almost essential pre-Japan viewing. Unfortunately, my video store, with its teeny-tiny 'arthouse/foreign' section, doesn't have it. Though of course they do have The Ramen Girl with Brittany Murphy. [Eye roll...]
ReplyDeleteBooks & flicks: Agreed. If you loved a book the movie is usually a huge let-down, if not outright anger-provoking. But I rate LWFC as both one of my favourite books and films of all time.
